Description

The self- propelled 90/53 Breda 501 is an Italian armored gun, designed during the Second World War and built in two prototypes.

During the campaign in North Africa, the Royal Army had successfully employed numerous rotated self-propelled vehicles, in particular the powerful 90/53 on Lancia 3Ro and Breda 52. Despite the excellent weapons and mobility of the two heavy trucks, these solutions did not allow the transport of an adequate amount of ammunition and proved vulnerable to the fire of tanks and planes. In 1942 the Ministry of War required a highly mobile self-propelled vehicle that could support the armored divisions. In 1943, the prototype of the Breda was completed and in July it carried out tests at the Centro Esperience d’Artilleria di Nettuno shooting range. However, the armistice of 8 September puts an end to the program and the prototype never saw combat.
